California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) is a cash aid program for low income families to meet their basic needs. It also provides education, employment, and training programs to help families get jobs and move towards self-sufficiency. Child care, transportation, work expenses and counseling are available for families in work activities. There is a forty-eight month time limit for adults but the children can remain on aid if otherwise eligible under the Safety Net Program. There are special services for pregnant teens through the Cal Learn Program. CalWORKs program is for pregnant women, or adults or Adults or Teen Parent(s) with dependent children (minors under the age of 19) who are deprived of parental support or care, see “Eligible Factors for CalWORKs" below. Refugee families with children may qualify for cash aid, medical assistance, employment services and other support services through the CalWORKs Program. Eligibility Factors Basic eligibility factors for a child (ren) and a needy parent(s) or caretaker relative include: Deprivation   The aided child must be deprived of parental support or care because at least one parent is: deceased; or either physically or mentally incapacitated; or the applicant parent is not working or is working less than 100 hours per month; or continually absent from the home. Age  Children may be eligible for CalWORKs until their 18the birthday, or 18 years old and in high school or vocational school full-time and expected to complete their program before their 19th birthday.  The aided child must be deprived of parental support or care because at least one parent is: deceased; or either physically or mentally incapacitated; or the applicant parent is not working or is working less than 100 hours per month; or continually absent from the home. Property The total property of a child (ren) and the parent(s) must be under the following limits:

To help process your application for the CalWORKs Program, you must provide the following necessary verifications for each person in the applicant household. Photocopies are acceptable.

• Birth Certificates or other proof of age and relationship.
• Social Security Numbers or proof of application.
• Copy of Driver’s License or other picture I.D.
• Proof of Residency.
• Copies of proof of all income, most current pay stub(s), Child Support and
• Alimony, Social Security Award Letters, Unemployment/Disability Benefits, VA Benefits.
• All current Checking and Saving Account statements or passbooks brought up-to-date by bank.
• Savings Bonds, Stock Certificates, Credit Union Statements, Money Market Certificates, and Retirement Accounts.
• Current Vehicle Registrations:  include cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, motor homes, or boats.  Include verification of balance owed on each vehicle.
• Pregnancy Verification (if pregnant).
• Immigration Status:  INS Registration Card (photo copy both sides), Citizenship Verification or Passport.
