Mediterranean Fruit Fly detected in Vacaville

October 14, 2016

SOLANO COUNTY / VACAVILLE, CALIFORNIA – The Solano County Agricultural Commissioner, the County of Solano, and the City of Vacaville, in cooperation with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture, announced that an extensive survey has begun in response to the detection of a single Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) within the City of Vacaville.

The extensive survey, also known as a delimitation survey, consists of multiple Medfly traps placed in consecutive circles extending four miles in each direction from the Medfly detection site.  An additional Medfly detection would trigger a quarantine.

The Medfly can infest more than 250 types of fruits and vegetables, causing severe impacts on California agricultural exports and backyard gardens.  Residents who believe their fruits or vegetables are infested with fruit fly larvae are encouraged to call the state's toll-free Pest Hotline at 1-800-491-1899 or your local Solano County Agricultural Commissioner’s office (707) 784-1310.
