County officials prepare for another winter storm – encourage residents to use extra safety precautions

February 17, 2017

SOLANO COUNTY – County Emergency Operations officials are once again making preparations for a wet winter storm system already soaking our region.  At this time, the National Weather Service is forecasting up to four inches of rain in Solano County, starting today and lasting through Tuesday, February 21, with the heaviest rains expected on Monday afternoon.  As part of the preparation and response effort, County officials are encouraging residents to use extra safety precautions during the holiday weekend.

"As the storm moves through our area once again we are encouraging all residents to take extra safety precautions while traveling and at home," says Don Ryan, Solano County Emergency Services Manager.  “If you encounter any dangerous situations like flooding, downed power lines, landslides or hazardous debris, please stay back and exercise caution.”

Residents are encouraged to consider the following tips and suggestions to help them have a safe holiday weekend while traveling and at home, including:

Pay close attention to flood advisory warnings
People who live in low-lying areas, near creeks, streams, canals and waterways are encouraged to prepare for localized flooding, even if the property has never flooded before.  A flood WATCH means flooding is possible in the area.  A flood WARNING means flooding is already happening.  If a flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

Staying connected during the storm
Residents can get the latest storm conditions by tuning into their favorite radio station, including KUIC 95.3, the County's official emergency radio station.  Updates, including flooding and road closures will be available on the County’s social media portals.  Follow @SolanoSheriff on Facebook and Twitter for up-to-date information.

Flood conditions, turn around – don’t drown
It is important to stay away from flood areas.  If you come upon a flowing stream of water, stop, turn around and go the other way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and water continues to rises, get out of your vehicle and head to higher ground.  Remember, turn around – don’t drown.

Assembling a flood preparedness kit
Having a flood preparedness kit ready to go may alleviate the stress of having to put something together last minute during an emergency.  The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) has put together a comprehensive list of supplies to include in your kit.  Access the list at Ready.Gov/Kit.

Take additional time to get where you are going
Rising creeks and streams may impact road conditions throughout the county.  County Public Works will coordinate with local law enforcement to monitor and close roads should they be impacted by flooding.  Drivers are encouraged to check local road conditions before they travel, plan additional time to get where they are going and to adhere to all traffic safety laws.
