County seeks community input for nominations of Woman of the Year – applications due February 13
February 2, 2018
SOLANO COUNTY – There is still time to submit nominations for the 2018 Solano County Woman of the Year, with all nominations due to the Solano County Library Foundation by Tuesday, February 13.
The committee for the annual Women's History Luncheon, part of the Solano Library Foundation, is seeking nominations of women who live in Solano County and have dedicated their time and talents to lifting women up and fighting discrimination. This year’s theme is "Nevertheless She Persisted."
The Women’s History Luncheon will feature Solano County author and community activist Pati Navalta Poblete as the keynote speaker. Ms. Poblete is a Bay Area journalist, serving as the community editor for the Vallejo Times Herald, news editor at the Alameda News Group and editorial writer and columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, where she was nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize for her editorial series on the need for foster care reform in California.
“Pati’s story is inspirational and uplifting,” says Frances McCullough, Solano County Library Foundation President. “She speaks profoundly about her personal experience and perfectly embodies our theme this year, showing us the power of determination and persistence.”
As the author of “The Oracles: My Filipino Grandparents of America,” and upcoming book “A Better Place,” she writes about discrimination and perseverance in her own life while speaking from a place of hope and determination, never allowing barriers or tragedy to keep her from pursuing her full potential.
“Our Woman of the Year will be someone who has broken barriers and built new pathways that promote equality,” says Woman of the Year Event Co-Chairperson Josette Lacey. “We need the help of the community to identify women who are champions against discrimination in our country.”
Nominees must live in Solano County, can attend the March 23 luncheon and are champions for other women, including working to ensure that women do not suffer from discrimination at the workplace, in their homes or in the community. All nominations are reviewed by a selection committee with the 2018 Woman of the Year award recipient to be announced on February 16.
Nomination forms, tickets and sponsorship opportunities can be found on the Solano County Library Foundation’s website at www.SolanoCountyLibraryFoundation.org and by emailing Jennifer Hamilton at HamJen@Att.net.
Proceeds from the annual luncheon fund library programs and books about women, including literacy programs supported by the Solano County Library Foundation. The 2018 Woman of the Year luncheon will be hosted on Friday, March 23 at the Nelson Community Center, located at 611 Village Drive in Suisun City from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tickets are $40.
Current library employees, elected officials and Solano County Library Foundation board members are not eligible for nomination.
