CalFresh benefits program expanding in Solano County

May 28, 2019

SOLANO COUNTY – The Solano County Department of Health and Social Services, Employment and Eligibility division is pleased to announce that starting June 1, the CalFresh food benefits program will expand to include older adults and people with disabilities receiving Supplemental Security Income.

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is expanding the CalFresh program to ensure that the most vulnerable Californians have access to nutritious food – all without disrupting their existing SSI eligibility or benefits in any way.

"The state's decision to expand the CalFresh program to include SSI benefit recipients will help a lot of our clients who are currently struggling to make ends meet in Solano County," says Kelley Curtis, Solano County Health and Social Services, Employment and Eligibility Services Administrator.  “The move helps us get closer to our goal of never having clients have to choose between paying rent, buying medicine or putting food on the table.”

There are three ways for Solano County residents to apply for CalFresh benefits, including click, call or come in.  Click www.GetCalFresh.org, call 1-877-847-3663 (FOOD) or come in to your local Vacaville, Fairfield or Vallejo Solano County Office of Public Assistance to start the application process.  The application process takes approximately 10 minutes, with eligible recipients receiving their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card within 30 days.

CalFresh, known federally as California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or “SNAP,” issues monthly electronic benefits to clients that can be used to purchase most foods at grocery markets and food stores.  CalFresh food benefits for one person range from $15 to $192 per month.

The Solano County Employment and Eligibility division administers federal, state and local public assistance programs designed to provide health coverage, cash and food assistance for eligible low-income residents, including CalFresh.

CalFresh benefit recipients with questions about the program should visit www.SolanoCounty.com/Depts/HSS/EES or call (707) 784-8050 for more information.
