County seeks Family Volunteer Day participants to benefit local seniors and Meals on Wheels - Saturday, November 23

November 19, 2019

SOLANO COUNTY – The County of Solano's volunteer program, in partnership with the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) is looking to mobilize volunteers of all ages for a Family Volunteer Day event to benefit Meals on Wheels.  Volunteers will gather at the Joseph Nelson Center, 611 Village Drive in Suisun City starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 23 to help assemble care packages for seniors in the community.  The event is drop-in and will last until 4 p.m.

In collaboration with Meals on Wheels, volunteers will help facilitate gifts to more than 700 seniors throughout Solano County – many of whom live alone – and would love some extra holiday cheer.  Volunteers will fill toiletry bags, make cards, and wrap specialty items. Families interested in participating are asked to bring wrapping paper, socks, playing cards, and toiletry items.

"Our goal is to engage the entire family," says Rhonda Smith, Volunteer Coordinator for Solano Volunteers.  “Families who volunteer side-by-side have an opportunity to connect and talk, to get to know each other and to make a positive, lasting difference in the communities in which they serve.”

ABOUT FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY EVENTS
Family Volunteer Day celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighborhoods and communities. Each year, thousands of families use the day to teach children valuable lessons about compassion and caring, develop real-life skills, and educate about their community.  Please note, all youth volunteers under age 16 are required to attend with an adult.

ABOUT SOLANO VOLUNTEERS
The Solano County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) in winter of 2016 to build an online volunteer system to better serve nonprofits and service-minded individuals.  Named “Solano Volunteers,” the online system has matched thousands of individuals to nonprofits since its inception. In addition to providing online volunteer matching services, Solano Volunteers produces National Days of Service and Family Days of Service events.
