Lynch Canyon Open Space Park

Lynch Canyon plays hosts to special events and guided tours year round, which you can see on the events calendar.  In the winter months when the park is seasonally closed to the general public, our partner Solano Land Trust continues to offer guided tours and hosted events.  Volunteers are always welcome to help with events, leading tours, and on special trail and habitat restoration projects (including Eagle Scout projects and High School community service hours).  Training for docents is included.  Prospective volunteers should contact our Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator at (707) 432-0150, extension 200.

Special events include a Kite Festival and the annual Lynch Canyon Trail Run and Community Hike (see also www.lynchcanyontrailrun.org).  The trail run features competitive trail running at 10k, half-marathon and marathon distances, as well as the non-competitive, community hike to the park's ridgetops.

Hiking, Guided Rides and Birdwatching
 Lynch Canyon Open Space

Knowledgeable volunteer docents lead free hikes of Lynch Canyon that include both challenging and easier hikes, bike rides and horseback Golden Eagle at Lynch Canyonrides on the park's open trails and wooded paths, as well as panoramic vistas around the Bay Area from the ridgetops.  For birdwatchers, you can see plenty of migrating birds, including golden eagles and other migratory hawks and falcons, as well as seasonal warblers, juncos, sparrows and a good selection of waterfowl at the reservoir.  Docents are there to help with spotting and bird identification.  Bring your binoculars, drinking water and a snack if you'd like.  Wear sturdy shoes and be dressed for the day's weather conditions

These hikes are scheduled regularly, weather-permitting, and are listed on the events calendar and at www.solanolandtrust.org.

The guided hikes and rides are generally free (unless otherwise noted), and the daily parking fee is only $6.  Participants provide their own equipment for the hikes/rides.

Volunteer Training

Docent training is offered in the spring each year, please check the events calendar or you may contact our Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator at (707) 432-0150, extension 200.

Trained docents will learn how to safely and confidently guide a wide variety of park users from hikers and students to equestrians and birders through Lynch?s rolling grasslands and bird-filled groves of native trees with spectacular ridge top views. Prior experience or knowledge is not required, just a willingness to learn and share.

The free training will include information about the area's plants, birds, ecology, history, and geology, as well as tips on how to prepare and present a fun program and interpret this amazing natural site for visitors. Land Trust staff and Solano County Park Rangers are anxious to expand the dedicated volunteer team actively supporting the Lynch Canyon Open Space, as well as our other volunteer program at Lake Solano County Park.

Docents are asked to lead at least 2 classes or tours per year at Lynch Canyon. Training will also be offered for other Land Trust sites where docents are needed including the vernal pools of Jepson Prairie Preserve, the native American (Patwin) program and historic blacksmith shop at Rush Ranch, and tours of King and Swett Ranches that are open only with staff or docent guides.
