| | | Organic Waste and Recycling
Organic waste can be diverted from landfills and used for the production of value-added products such as compost, fertilizers, and biofuels. Reducing the amount of organic material sent to landfills is one of California's strategies for reaching the statewide 75 percent recycling goal.
If composting is available, consider composting food scraps on site! This is an excellent way to add nutrients to a garden or landscaping. Follow this link here to start a home composting project. If onsite composting is not available, organic waste belongs in the green compost bin.

Managing food scraps
If not handled properly, adding nutrient rich food scraps to your green bin can increase the potential for odors and pests. Consider these tips for preventing pests at your residence or business:
Keep it Dry: Drain away any extra liquid from food waste. For outdoor food waste bins, ensure rain does not enter the bin. Freezing food scraps until collection day will also prevent decomposition, cutting down on odors and mess. Food scraps can also be layered with yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, plant cuttings) to keep the compost bin clean and dry.
Keep it Sealed: Ensure all waste bins are closed tightly at all times.
Keep It Clean: Frequently rinse food waste bins with soap and water. Baking soda can be added to eliminate lingering odors.
Use Compostable Bags/Liners: Include a compostable liner such as a brown paper bag to package food scraps for disposal. Always check with your local waste collection service first before using compostable plastic bags.
