Disaster Debris Removal Phase 1

Phase 1: Household Hazardous Waste Removal
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is nearing completion on the survey, collection and disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW), electronic waste (e-waste) and asbestos containing material (ACM) at properties within Solano County affected by the LNU Lightning Complex fire.

Examples of HHW and Asbestos included in the Phase 1 debris removal:

  • Aerosol Cans
  • Batteries
  • Cleaners
  • Compressed Gas Cylinders
  • Fertilizer
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Fluorescent Light Ballasts
  • Herbicides
  • Oils
  • Paint
  • Pesticides
  • Propane Cylinders (BBQ-size)
  • Solvents
  • Suspect Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) that can be removed in less than an hour (ie., Transite Siding, Floor Tile, etc.)

Why is HHW removed?

Following a fire, HHW products require special handling and disposal, especially if their containers are compromised. HHW may pose a threat to human health, animals and the environment. HHW removal will clear the way for proper removal of ash and debris, allowing the rebuilding process to begin. Phase 1 debris removal is being conducted at no cost to property owners. Disaster funding is coordinated through local, state, and federal agencies.

How will I know when the process has started and been completed?

What do the Stakes, Symbols and Colors mean?

  • White Stake and Sign = Site has been cleared of HHW
  • White “X” = Empty HHW container or cylinder
  • White “MT” = Fuel tank was empty, or contents transferred
  • Pink Paint = Suspect ACM that will exceed one-hour to remove and will be left in place
  • Orange Paint = Septic system location or damaged transformer
